Accelerating Ambitious and Just Coal Phase-outs online event

Lola Nacke will be presenting her work on financial compensation for coal phase-out at a CINTRAN Coal + Regions in transitions event on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 at 11:00 – 12:00 CET — register here!

Regional and national governments are confronting the challenge of phasing out fossil fuels, without negatively impacting workers and communities who rely on the industry for their livelihoods. This seminar discusses two of the main policy approaches for facing this challenge. Stakeholder commissions bring together different actors to identify strategies to accelerate coal phase-out without harming local communities and regions. Such negotiations often result in financial compensation that helps local and regional actors prevent and alleviate the negative effects of coal phase-out.

Within this webinar, you will have the opportunity to learn researchers working at the core of these issues by answering the following questions:

  • What are the outcomes of “stakeholder commissions” in different European countries?

  • How are national and international compensation policies set up, and who are their ultimate beneficiaries?

This is the 9th online event of our CINTRAN capacity-building programme aimed at practitioners interested in learning more about the just energy transition in coal+ regions across Europe. Speakers include representatives from the Just Transition Platform, regional and local governments and the CINTRAN team with the latest research on the role of stakeholder commissions and financial compensation at and beyond the European level.
